An entertaining "look" -- or better, LISTEN -- at some of the calls an information operator has to deal with on a daily basis. A quick and thoroughly enjoyable read. My only criticism of the book is the formatting in the Kindle edition, but I have to assume it's difficult to format an e-book with photos interspersed in the narrative. But the book is so funny that was easy to overlook. I knew Ellyn Ramich had a great sense of humor, and the book gives the reader insight into the amount of patience a 411 operator must have.Product details

Very quick light read that will make you chuckle.
Fabulous book and is a real pick me up during the day. I keep it in my drawer at the office and read a page or two after stressful meetings or phone calls. It is just the right thing to make me crack a smile and keep my day moving.
411 is off the charts hilarious. It made me wish I had a job at the phone company. I would apply but I'm not sure if it's a business or residence!
If you're interested in a book that will make you laugh out loud this is it. Great way to stifle a bad day! Thanks for all the laughs and please hold - I need 411 part 2.
I admit that after reading "411" by Ellyn Ramich I have serious doubts about the future of the human race.
The reason for my pessimism?
The gene pool - which was not all that deep to begin with - has apparently gotten extremely shallow if the book's anecdotes about average people calling telephone operators for information is any indication of 21st Century IQ levels. Not to put too fine a point on it, but a lot of villages have apparently allowed their idiots access to telephones.
This book has no plot, no characters, and no narrative It is, in fact, simply a collection of conversations between callers and operators. Many are very short, some a little longer, and all of them are pretty funny if you ignore the fact that there seems to be an awful lot of extremely stupid people (some of them quite rude as well) out and about.
The version of this eBook has severe formatting issues that make it a little uncomfortable to read. If you can ignore those issues, however, I think you'll find this short book gives you an inside look at just what 411 operators have to deal with on a daily basis.
Very humorous--the perfect book to take along on a flight, train or to read on the beach--shades of "MAD" and "Cracked" magazines--funny photos, too!
This had great reviews but I found it very dull. I have worked in a call center myself and found this call snippets tame by comparison to the calls I have had myself.
This prompted a few belly laughs. I read the book in two sittings and found it very entertaining, laughing out loud several times. Well worth the purchase price to inject a healthy dose of humor to your day!
